Don't worry Alison, depressing music sometimes makes me feel good in a funny sort of way.
I reckon that if I feel I'm having a bad time or had a crap day,I can listen to say DSCH 4 or Weinberg 17,then I think 'now that's some one having a tough time of it' and perhaps my day hasn't been so bad after all.

Anyway, rounding off the week with Haydn 96 / Dorati.

    Night night all.

A busy day with church keyboard duties, visit to parents and early evening BBQ all thrown in the mix. Car listening consisted of tchaikovsky 5 (Jurowski) and the recent BBCMM disc of Beethoven and Holst.

Thoroughly fed up with the Dr who proms. The first Saturday evening prom, indeed the whole of the first weekend, was something special and a sign that better times had arrived.

Good evening Alison and BBM,hope you are both well, where's teamsaint? is he on his hols, not heard from him for a few days.
Had the house to myself most of the day, yaaahooo, wife and son working,so lots of listening.
Quite a bit of Mozart and Schubert piano and chamber music, including the Lupu/Perahia disc of the Mozart 2 piano sonata and Schubert's Fantasy,a desert islander for me,gorgeous.

Here I am, Alison! Just recovering from hearing Stravinsky's Rite at the Proms. And the heat in my listening room is incredible - but I'm not complaining. This is the kind of Sunday I like: one when I'm off to the Proms the following morning. Got one or two of the Bambergers Mahler with Nott so will interesting to hear their Mahler 5, a piece that was in my very first live Prom on July 24 1978 so this is my 36th season .

Gosh, you're getting going early in the season.

Should be a good chance to assess JN in the flesh. He'd be a serious candidate for LSO in my book.

I still think M5 is by some distance the weakest and least interesting of the symphonies.

I often used to go to the First Night, especially in the days when it was Mahler 8 or Gurrelieder. A very fine Missa Solemnis from Bernard Haitink sticks in the memory too. Heard so many Mahler 5's at the Proms I've lost count. Interesting comment there about Nott, Alison. Has he ever conducted the LSO?

Fairly certain I saw Mr Nott scheduled for concerts with the LSO next season.

Jonathan Nott, a contender perhaps? After Rattle goes?

All rather irksome, but had a fabulous day at middle sprogs graduation in Canterbury Cathedral today, so can't complain. I honestly can't think of a better venue anywhere. And glorious weather and a good brass ensemble playing fanfares.
