There are lots of clips of Bernstein discussing Beethoven on youtube, though I could only find a short clip on Symphony #4.

The one I watched with him discussing Brahms 4 was sensational. part way through a discussion of Schumann #2 ATM.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

In the Mahler 9 thread I started, I posted a link earlier to a documentary in which he discusses the symphony whilst rehearsing it with the Vienna Philharmonic.

Actually on a semi serious note, the info on here can be rather overwhelming, what with SC's journey, Neglected British/yanks etc/jazz !!
Could you just do one lesson a week, please , with say 2 works. That would help the newbie settle in at a sensible pace.
            Just asking, like !!
Noting your subsequent messages, I tend to stick to one area of music at a time, TS, as I find that it avoids "musical overload".

Having said that, I'm equally at fault here, because there's so much useful information and stuff that one doesn't want to overlook anything!

I am trying to focus...but it's not easy. As you said, I don't want to miss anything, and I tend to like delving around to find things. I'm not really into hearing many different versions of works, (though of course that has a place).
Hey ho, its a "Good Problem" as they say these days !

An interesting approach, and one that can quickly overwhelm. I go through phases of discovering a new composer and devouring all their works, and then, sated, turn aside to something new. Or old. Recently, I've come back to Mahler by way of (new to me) Wagner. I can happily plough through lots of different versions of the same symphony until I find one that opens up the work for me in a new way. Take Mahler 9 - the interpretative choices seem endless, but simplicity often pays dividends (or seeming simplicity). It's amazing how a direct approach (Walter) without any gussying up of tempi can do wonders for a work.

Nor am I - it strikes me as a problem with "ants in pants" - but a large proportion of forum posts are directed towards comparisons of this kind!

I'll be another year older (Weds) by the time next weekend comes!

Still, chuffed by the weekend's winning horses and the prospect of some boxed sets courtesy of Amazon birthday gift vouchers and the extra spending power, rather looking forward to this week.

I ask because I enjoyed reading them (I wasn't a member at that time, a mere 'lurker'), and these type of threads often provoke a lot of interest/debate/unusual recordings, etc., as Brahms 2 shows.
This is the Forum's own BaL recommendations for when the actual programme takes a Summer Break. I think somebody just reopens the Thread and makes a suggestion.

Beethoven's Fourth Symphony? Klemperer or Krivine my tops, but it's one of those works that everybody seems to do well. I once heard an amateur orchestra attempt it - their giving their all made for one of the most (positively) memorable concerts I've ever attended.

Thanks Rob. Was having to decide between a couple of boxes. Now looks as if I can have both!
