Why? (Roehre, I mean, not you!)
Addiction, I hope, rather than unpleasantness.

Yes, it did, though I don't understand (and haven't investigated) his reference to a (much) previous posting.
Perhaps he thought that the thread was going round in an endless loop?

He never did post again after his goodbye message. A real shame.

A great shame that someone like Roehre felt like that, when the thread is just meant a bit of fun to have around this time of year, that's all.

Good service from st Johns Cambridge. I've listened to that every year since I was a kid, wish I had kept recordings of the George Guest years.

Am not joining in the Classical Association thread this year. To think poor Roehre felt obliged to quit the forum on account of that thread!

I like assembling a pool of discs to listen to over the Christmas Holiday. Tchaikovsky string 4tets are in there and that new Rachmaninov 1 appeals. Any ideas for a Lyrita CD or two?

What's happened to Mr Pee? Does Sky Arts have any classical on now?

Just a few random musings. Sending you all positive vibes from Chelmsford.
              Good evening my friend.

Yes I really miss Roehre's contributions, perhaps we should organise a petition to get him back

Well I'm enjoying the retired life, feeling quite well too although very tired, just making the most of each day and keeping active.

Enjoyed Richard Rodney Bennett's 3rd Symphony and ' Lady Caroline Lamb' as a one off listen on the radio just now,not in the mood for the Stravinsky that's on now even though I did apply for tickets and was unsuccessful.

Lyrita cds that are giving me great pleasure currently are Cyril Rootham (Ode on the morning of Christ's Nativity and 2nd Symphony) and Arnold Cooke (4th and 5th Symphonies).

Chelmsford? I have vivid memories associated with the place, which I have driven through only once. Early in the New Year of 1985, I was returning to my flat in Leyton after visiting my family in Lancashire for Christmas - I had literally only passed my driving test less than three weeks earlier, and the journey back (accompanied by the thyen brand new cassettes of Karajan's digital Rosenkavalier) was only the second time I'd done the long journey. As I reached the outskirts of London, I drove into a dense blanket of thick fog - and couldn't see a ruddy thing: putting foglamps on only made things worse: the beam of light just bounced off the white fog back into my eyes. Unsure of where I was, I was grateful to see directions lettered in the road itself: "C'ford" - fantastic! I could easily find my way home from Chingford ...

Good to hear retirement is suiting you ER, despite the health issues. Are you finding time for a bit more reading about music ? I think that was something you hoped to do?

Still the old 9 to 5 for me, and the big run in to Xmas. Been a very busy year for me, bit of a white knuckle ride. my boss left at Xmas last year and two of us have had to keep the sales wagon rolling. Looking hopeful for a good end to the year, and I'm really optimistic for sales for next year, for reasons that I won't bore you with.
I recently managed to get some order into my CDs, which involved my rudimentary DIY skills, and an excellent outfit called " Ironmongery Direct" !! Not the mammoth job that it would be for some of you, but finding stuff is now the work of minutes rather than hours....usually....

Right, all that off my chest, where do I sign the Roehre petition ?

Regarding Roehre, of course nobody knows what might be going on in a forum member's life apart from what he/she chooses to share. There are all kinds of reasons for leaving a place like this for a while. I've done it myself, usually when I notice myself going through a phase of breaking my general social-media principle not to post anything unless I think (rightly or wrongly!) that I have something to say. (Am I breaking it now, I wonder... ) Then I start thinking I should be spending all that time and energy on something else. At such times I usually carry on having a quick look in now and again since there are so often so many interesting contributions and enthusiasms here. I do miss Roehre's contributions. Most of all though I miss Simon Howard's, and unfortunately he won't be coming back. (He left us almost exactly three years ago.)

Leyton? Went out with a guy from there (Scotts Road). He couldn't drive and I had to do all the running around. Then his mum decided she liked me and started coming out with us the whole time. It was around the time Rattle's Mahler 5 came out which he thought was absolutely brilliant. Not much hope for us after that and I still remember the Easter Monday we split up in a garden centre near Harlow. As for Chelmsford, we are a city now and the Christmas lights were switched on this afternoon. I was still living in Hertford in 1985.

Me and MrsBBM have decided that probably be during summer next year most likely, that we be having a party of some sorts. You might call it a "victory" party! That's when all this treatment I going through would have finally ended and hopefully regain some sense of "normal" life again!

Good to have this thread brought back to life. It's the usual countdown to Christmas here. As always, in order to avoid the madness of Christmas shopping (learnt this the hard way), I try to have all of it done before December even starts by means of mentally thinking of Christmas Day as December 1. Believe me, this works and I recommend it to all. No more of that dashing around on Christmas Eve hunting for presents before the shops close!

There's a sigh of relief that the horse racing jumps season is back as it means I can return to the winning ways that deserted me during the summer Flat season. Already doing rather well thanks, three winners yesterday and a Lucky 31 when all five came in a fortnight ago. This is how I fund my 'big box' addiction

Yes, sad to see Roehre did not return. My own view was that he probably felt he was spending far too much time on here. I've cut back a bit myself as I've noticed others probably have as well (if I'm not mistaken).

Yes still enjoying reading up on music but mainly biographies currently, including re reading some favourites, just finished Richard Osborne's Karajan.
Managed to pick up cheap battered copies of Tovey's Essays in Musical Analysis a while back, language a bit dated but fascinating reading.
Still toying with the idea of buying a second hand upright piano and taking up lessons maybe in the new year

Like the sound of those Lyritas Edgey.

The new piano sounds a good idea.
