With November 5 being mid-week, fireworks have been going off round here since last Thursday and the local public display isn't until next Saturday, the 8th. My sister's dog has been terrified already. The cat takes no notice whatever.

Got two 7/1 winners yesterday netting a cool £160 but all I'm doing is clawing back the losses of the summer, so resisting (so far) the temptation to buy that boxed set.

I don't like Haloween or Guy Fawkes though

Plenty of time for the Foxes to turn things round, Alison, hopefully starting next Sunday. Nige should get a good reception at SMS, he is a minor cult hero down here for saving us from relegation by the skin of the teeth, and then getting sacked for his trouble !!

I hope Petrushka is feeling better. He was spotted doing some daytime midweek posting suggesting some sick leave was taken.

Yup, spot on ER, living the dream. A round of redundancies going on at work, if only I was looking at a huge redundancy payment, wouldn't see me for dust. THey seem to think that sacking sales people will help sell more books, sacking editors will help produce better books, and so on. Bonkers.

Anyhow, Saints fans really are living the dream, and I have some Friday Night music lined up this week.

St Petersburg Philharmonic playing Prokofiev VC #2 and Tchaik 6 in Amazingstoke. Should help keep spirits up during the week.
No chance of redundancy for me alas. I've been with the company for 25 years next February and it'll cost them too much. Even if I volunteered I'd more than likely be turned down. They just make your life a misery until you jump ship of your own accord and cost them nothing.

Better than I was, Alison, thanks, but it's proving difficult to shake off the cough and stuffy nose. I only took Monday and Tuesday off but wished I'd taken the week. Managed to catch up on some unplayed CDs anyway so it's an ill wind...

Rather saddened by the news of Acker Bilk's death this Sunday evening. One of the major figures of my childhood, his Aria brings it all vividly back.

Thanks ER. It will come out OK I think , for now. Hopefully there is a decent chance that we will all get what we want, but its not nice till its sorted. the bosses seem to have us where they want us.

I only have 7 years service, having been self employed for 20 years before that, so its keep working or move somewhere cheaper !!

Been there, done that, got the tee shirt...many times over the years. Sometimes survived the purge, sometimes not. As I said above, the bosses will make lives as difficult as possible while a 'consultation period' takes place in the hope (often fulfilled) that some employees will jump ship without the need for redundancy payments. Bosses will play all kinds of mind games to achieve it without actually breaking the law.

Diwali usually happens at the end of October, so that extends the firework 'season'. We have a lot fewer fireworks pre-Nov 5th than we used to. I think the rules about selling & letting them off changed a few years back; I don't know if they are different in England?

Try setting yourself up as a union rep, ER. IME they make life so untenable from that point on you'll be seen as having voted your own redundancy.

Anyone in this Sunday evening? Can't believe that today is the first anniversary of my father's death - where does the time go? Had a Messiaen & Bruckner 9 evening by way of commemoration.

Any more news on the redundancy situation ts or is it the period of 'consultation'?

No wins on the horses this weekend but much enjoyed watching the racing from Cheltenham. I was on the Hobbs/Johnson horses that didn't win, such is my luck these days!

Was on a spa afternoon but have enjoyed watching replays of the Cheltenham action. Mr Hobbs is having a tremendous time of it. I like him.

                              Yes how time flies Pet.

Only five full weeks to Christmas. Ouch!

I'd forgotten what an absolutely belting rendition of the Pathetique Symphony is delivered by Sir Charles Mackerras and the Philharmonia.

A thrilling end to a weekend!
