How I agree! I usually find it's about the tenth card, in which I'm writing a message, where I'm sufficiently "into the rhythm" for the recipient to get a message which actually relates to him or her.
Very best wishes Pet. I only wish I had some annual leave left to take off a Monday!
Christmas shopping going pretty well. It's the cards that are the loathsome task.
Gradually assembling my batch of Christmas CDs. My brother is kindly getting the LPO Beethoven Symphonies set.
Thought I'd give the Arensky Piano Quintet a try.
Thanks Alison. The day of our annual Christmas lunch is one marked off as a holiday right from the start so always make sure I have at last one day left out of my entitlement.
My copy of the LPO/Haitink Beethoven Symphonies arrived last week and has been put to one side for opening on Christmas morning. Sorely tempted to open immediately but resisted the impulse. Thing is I'd already ordered Szell's LvB cycle some time ago so I'll have two to loo forward to!

Not getting Jansons lvB then ? I'm tempted (good price, interesting couplings) but have resisted so far. The Chailly Brahms is another puzzle. I know the orchestral sound will be very alluring but how compelling is the conducting over and above that ? Perhaps a cheaper download is indicated.

Yes, the Jansons looks very tempting but I too have so far resisted. It's on my wish list so some other family member may get it he says hopefully. The Chailly Brahms will also be in my Christmas stocking (already bought).

I've been thinking about buying the Haitink Brahms cycle, as I am not too sure about the Chailly?
Which Haitink Brahms cycle would that be, BBM? LSO or Concertgebouw? The former is generally disappointing though the 2nd is a corker and easily the best of the four. The Concertgebouw box including the concertos, overtures and Hungarian Dances is unalloyed pleasure and is to be preferred. Personally, I like the Boston set best of all but copies may be hard to come by these days.
As for the Chailly set, I've not heard it but have come across good reports.

Tempus certainly does fugit! Just 10 days until Christmas Day! Still got some shopping to do and only got next weekend to do it. I've done 99% of my shopping online so you can all blame the likes of me for the death of the High Street. The office Secret Santa has been sorted anyway but wish I could slide out of it somehow. At least we don't do any of those awful Christmas parties at work any more. Used to hate them and in the end refused to go.

Couldn't agree more Pet,horrible things.
I always used the 'can't get babysitter' for evening ones or 'it's the kids school nativity play' for afternoons.
Now I use the same excuses but use the grandchildren as the reason.
Increasingly I feel able to just say I don't want to go these affairs. Folk seem to respect you more rather than less I've found.
I hate clock watching and planning exit strategies at these bashes. You'd do anything to be at home with the simple pleasures of putting on a CD or contributing to the forum!
