I'm just pleased when I get a few answers right myself.
And I'm even more pleased when I understand the answer to a question when the interruption happens/answer has been given (often way) before the question has finished.
All too often my partner I just look at each other in blank disbelief and say: What?

An odd programme last night - I couldn't make out a word the St Edmunds captain said, which didn't help. The other captain was also quite, sudden.

I've been listening to Beethoven 6 all my life without realising there was supposed to be a nightingale there, as well as the quail and cuckoo. And I'm a birder who's heard hundreds of nightingales, at home and abroad. Which just goes to show - without the verbals, it's just music.

It might have helped the Oxford captain to occisionally look at the woman on his left who seemed to have an idea about some of the questions.

Another car crash last night. Two starter questions (or was it a starter, and separate bonus questions) on the periodic table?

... and, perhaps it's just me, but two of the most annoying team Captains on a single programme (the Warwick bloke even looked like an inflated version of the York guy) - those shrugging "Who cares?" when they didn't know the answer, the air punches when they got answers correct, the gurning when they didn't ... AND the drama queen antics of the Warwick captain when "consulting" his team. The Warwick team did very well, but ... I just hope the Captain's mother gives him a really good, HARD slap for showing her up like that on national television!

(And I see that shouty MONKMAN!! from last year has been given a Radio 4 show with the more dignified Booby Seagull. Thankfully in the trailer he didn't SUDDENLY SHOUT OUT as if Paxman were in a different Studio - instead, he ended every sentence with that rising cadence that made it sound as if he wasn't sure of anything: "My name is Eric Monkman?? And I've been given a show on Radio 4??? Has anyone ever even heard of that????")

Indeed - a sort of "Whatever", and implied "If you say so" to Paxo.

Yes - he's been hired for his mannerisms, which will become even more of a caricature as a result. Can he cook, or dance, I wonder? Just a thought.

Aaah yes but a good "music" question

and at least the Warwick captain actulally allowed the woman to speak

Yes, unlike last week where the "captain" didn't even glance to his left.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

In the latest edition of the Radio Times, Eric Monkman explains the reason for his shouty delivery:

I don’t normally talk in that tone but most of my answers are just me trying to speak up and be heard well ... We practice speaking up because you have to make sure the person on the other end of the table can hear you. You don’t want your team or Paxman saying ‘hey what was that?’ So you get used to delivering your answers with a fair bit of volume.”

I liked Bobby Seagull. He was very good at involving the whole team, and the fact he gave up a (presumably very well paid) job in the City to teach maths at his old school in Newham is admirable.
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

Last night's Courtauld Inst team were particularly useless. I answered three art questions which defeated them - Constable, Wright of Derby, Degas.... Styling yourself as David Hockney is not enough.
