And, for the pedant, "Once in Royal" is a hymn and not a carol.

What's the difference between a carol, a hymn and a song? (Or should that be 'what are the differences?)

I think you may need The Canterbury Dictionary of Hymnology.

          Here’s an explanation of carols:

Thanks for that, really interesting. I see there's an instance of 'fayr' - doesn't excuse the daft and irritating usages these days but, rather annoyingly, shows it did exist.

Did Jeremy really pronounce the word 'mnemonic' wrongly? (Just one of my things....)

                Yes. It sounded like "pneumonic".

Also "Tannhäuser". I have noticed previously that he seems to have a problem with umlauts.

I remember him getting mnemonic wrong not long ago.

I thought Jeremy was less than gracious to Wofson, Oxford last night. They did a terrific job, nearly catching up with Corpus Christi with their polymath captain, but got no praise for it. They do fight again another day, I think.

I was certainly rooting for Wolfson's captain Jones over the impressive but irksomely effusive Wang of Corpus.

...as was I! I think 'irksomely effusive' describes him perfectly.

                          Funnily enough, I wasn’t irked...he’s amazing.

Sadly, I think he's all too aware of how amazing he is - a bit like Ms Alker on sterioids. Perhaps he wants to be the next Bobby Seagull.

I must stress that my first post on this subject (#1269) was not intended to put down Corpus's captain, Mr Wang. He's a young guy and can't help his brain driving his fizzing temperament! He's clearly got a wide knowledge of a wide range of subjects and amazing powers of recall. (Just once or twice, maybe, he hasn't fully consulted his team before answering team questions.) Jeremy was the butt of my argument!

I like the way teams are beginning to see the game as a kind of over-the-top display opportunity...too solemn and no one has fun, imv.
