It hadn't occurred to me about the male line-up. I'm not really an un-reconstructed male chauvinist pig. But I wonder if one should really choose a team on the basis of including a 'token' woman' or a 'token man'? Anyway, they did extremely well, and I was rather sorry they didn't win. Hope they come back in a 'highest scorer' round.
My youngest daughter was offered a place at St Mary's College (in the days when it was still all-female) but turned it down on the grounds that (according to her supposition) they were all lacrosse-playing l......

I wasn't convinced by the rather defensive explanation of why Durham can field only one team because its collegiate structure is apparently based on pastoral rather than academic principles. Mind you, it doesn't bother me who wins as long as it's not an Oxbridge team.

Re gender balance, I would not favour some kind of positive discrimination but have read that women are reluctant to put themselves forward for fear of the negative consequences of exposure to social media that taking part can bring about. If true, this would be very sad.
