I think she's cast again for the forthcoming season's run too. Looking forward to it. They are great productions - of I Pagliacci as well.

... but I was a bit disappointed that Durham had four blokes. As an ancient alumnus I would normally support their team but found myself not too upset when they lost to an opponent that was 50/50 on gender.

It hadn't occurred to me about the male line-up. I'm not really an un-reconstructed male chauvinist pig. But I wonder if one should really choose a team on the basis of including a 'token' woman' or a 'token man'? Anyway, they did extremely well, and I was rather sorry they didn't win. Hope they come back in a 'highest scorer' round.

My youngest daughter was offered a place at St Mary's College (in the days when it was still all-female) but turned it down on the grounds that (according to her supposition) they were all lacrosse-playing l......

I think there's a bit of a cluster around the 145 mark - they may have a tie to deal with....

Selection of team members on the basis of gender equality could lead to pressure to also take account of social background, sexual orientation, skin colour, political leanings and who knows what else. UC may be only an entertainment show, but surely you pick the strongest team from those that audition within the institution concerned?
I wasn't convinced by the rather defensive explanation of why Durham can field only one team because its collegiate structure is apparently based on pastoral rather than academic principles. Mind you, it doesn't bother me who wins as long as it's not an Oxbridge team.

I'd choose team members according to their ability to say "hello" rather than "hi".

I don't know really know how things work at Oxbridge in respect of what proportion of teaching is Department/Faculty-based rather than College-based. It must vary from subject to subject. Whatever is the case, the disproportionate inclusion of Oxbridge teams year on year somewhat detracts from the programme for me and, like you, I will usually hope that their teams lose. This at least creates a more diverse combination in later rounds.

Re gender balance, I would not favour some kind of positive discrimination but have read that women are reluctant to put themselves forward for fear of the negative consequences of exposure to social media that taking part can bring about. If true, this would be very sad.

Hardly any of them say “reading” now.
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."
