It seems to me that you have got the rules right. In any case, it wasn't so much a stumbled answer as a post-buzzer continuation of the search for one. While it might be unkind to describe it as conscious sportsmanship, he certainly shouldn't have been allowed to get away with it - again.

A good contest tonight with well-matched teams, I thought. Some very hard questions though. An interesting music question. With the Singer/Polignac connection we anticipated the Poulenc Organ Concerto might come up...but not easy for non-specialists. I thought the science/maths topics were especially arcane.

Just a reminder that the new series starts on Monday 15th July at 2030 on BBC 2 with a match between Lancaster and Glasgow.

          Hadn’t spotted that, thanks

Was it any good? An Oxbridge round tonight.....wondering if we have the energy for another series, I suppose it helps keep the brain active.

(just caught up...so did I ) As you say....though perhaps the question was confusing, I thought for a moment it was looking for a name for the watercourse featured in the Pastoral....not that that's an excuse for thinking it was by Handel - extraordinary in view of the other replies.....

A rabbit-in-headlights performance from the Lancaster captain, and their classical music expert on the left has a bad attack of the Derhams.....

                  - somebody mentioned elsethread that an announcer had mispronounced Smetana's name for the Ma Vlast Prom.

There used to be a story that, when an English Musician pronounced the composer's name with the emphasis on the second syllable, the composer corrected him by singing to the tune of the Finale of Beethoven's 8th Symphony

My name is Smetana, Smetana, Smetana
My name is Smetana, Smetana, Smetana
                  Not Sme-Taaa-na, Not Sme-Taa-na, Not Sme-Taa-na,
                  Not at all.
... which is probably one of those stories that are so delightful that they can't be true.

And the prize for most annoying team captain goes to.....

I hope someone has a word with him about being a smartarse and answering over the end of the question so that we can't hear either. No doubt he will become an internet sensation. I liked the Merton team, I do hope they come back as a highest-scoring loser but it'll be touch and go.

Couldn't agree more about the immensely irritating Mr Wang (was he ON something?). Bobby Seagull and Leo were bad enough - perhaps being hyper and pumped-up is now considered essential rather than just advantageous or amusing/entertaining.

Yes - I was very pleased that the winning team last week lacked any of these "this is my moment on telly, and I'm going to milk it" characters. Mr Wang's self-indulgent showing-off is typical of not a few recent team members, and it's really putting me off watching.

Like many television programme a surfeit of confidence seems to be the required qualification.

An odd situation where pronouncing a name correctly leaves a sour taste.
