I was quite surprised at how close the final scores were. I expected Imperial to romp home.

Yes, much closer than I expected, and much closer than their previous match.

With regard to the criticism noted earlier in the thread, there is a feature about the team on Imperial’s website and the Captain addresses some of the negative comments made about him.

Most of the criticism comes from a good place. I think there's people who are concerned that the show historically hasn't had much representation of different types of people and there’s a desire for that to be improved.

But I think there's also just an element of people misunderstanding. On the show, I can't hear Max through my own ears because of the glass screens, but I can hear his voice loud and clear because we wear in-ear pieces. I can hear the whole team regardless of the way I’m facing. Depending on how the questions fall you end up looking one way or the other way depending on who’s specialty you think it is. There's not much opportunity for general conversation. In the moment, you're just concerned about how to get the answer as fast as possible.

I think from the perspective of our team, we know each other. We’re all good friends and have spent over a year with each other now. If any of the team members had any concerns, I’m sure they wouldn’t shy away from telling me. But generally, we take the good and bad of the social media experience together, in our stride and with humour.

The piece also reveals that Fatima Sherriff is the President of Imperial’s Quiz Society.

This win means Imperial join Manchester and Magdalen College Oxford on four wins.
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

Yes, much closer than I expected....
Incredibly close...either team could have won. A most enjoyable final. As someone mentioned above, the human gazetteer was unbelievable.
We got Nixon in China right...and to my astonishment Mrs A got two of the characters right too!
Returning to an old quibble, I think the average age of one team was 38. We shouldn't be age-ist I suppose, but was UC conceived for that age group? If in addition to being something of a brain-box, you also have a decade or so of extra life-experience...and you're still not old enough to start suffering from slow recall...it must be an advantage.

I thought Akhnaten was a pretty good guess, when the answer was Nixon in China.

What?! A very different composer. The clips were clearly sung in English (Akhnaten only has the commentary in English, other than that it is sung variously in ancient Egyptian, Hebrew and Akkadian. Had they, and maybe you, listened to the words, it would have been all too obvious that it could not be Akhnaten. The alternative suggestion of Satyagraha was equally to be ruled out for similar reasons. It is sung in Sanskrit.

Ms Stoatfoe suggested that if we got a chart of the periodic table and hung it in the downstairs loo, we'd walk UC.

Following the first programme of the new series this Monday (with Paxman's successor) there looks to be a welcome review on the programme's more-than-half-century...

And not forgetting that the comparably cryptic Only Connect returns on the same evening.

It looks as if this series (starting tomorrow) is Paxman's last. If I've read things right, his successor will be doing it from 2023.

Indeed, I'd recently read several articles about the new presenter and incorrectly assumed he would be at the helm for this new series.

The ‘trombone solos in symphonic works’ round was right up my street

To my chagrin, the second bonus escaped me
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

As soon as they mentioned trombone solos in orchestral music I thought...Rimsky-Korsakov will be in there
The young lady in University College Oxford seemed to know that Holst was a trombonist, not that it did them much good on the bonuses!

                            Curses!

They should have chosen Sibelius 7, to keep it symphonic …. (as opposed to concertante)

It is my considered belief that the classical music questions are getting harder.
