Surely there must be some reaction to the Goldberg Variations question ( and more to the point, the answer ? )

indeed. Excellent commentary as ever here . Wasn't sure about the green lipstick but a most entertaining team. I was interested in this round as this was No.1 niece's alma mater. As for the other lot - the guy in the beret needed only a baguette or string of garlic. It's all very well posing (as the whole team did, with their annoying intros) if you can then back it up by being any good, but this lot were useless at anything other than being poseurs. Harsh, but fair.

Do people think they spend their entire student loan on being sartorial these days?

Well when Jeremy Paxman said 'questions on popular music'. I thought oh, does that mean they have dumped classical? However, I didn't recognise one of them and that was the Kanye West!

Well Bach was pretty switched on, wasn't he? Or was that Wendy Carlos?

I think I heard Paxo say that the London Institute in Paris had only 120 students. whereas the opposition represented a student body of around 8,000. As for clothing, not much that couldn't be picked up in charity shops.....

(I fell off the chair laughing at 'synthesiser'.)

                I disagree strongly.

They weren't even any good at poseuring.

I wondered how the Paris-based team managed to get through the qualifying heats or eliminators or whatever method the producers use to select the teams that make it on air.
I agree strongly with #1027! I don't think there's any correlation between the number of students represented and the performance of those representing them. The seies as a whole is becoming a bit tedious, don't you think?

None of whom appeared even to have heard of Racine, judging by their reactions upon hearing Paxo give them the answer.

Oh, I wouldn't go that far - there's been some stonking close-calls, and/or several individuals who seemed to know every answer - and I like the way many of the questions now involve more than just a simple recollection of facts.

I suppose we should be grateful he didn't appear in a striped Breton jersey.

I thought the Goldsmith team were OK, especially the Indian guy on our left, and the 'captain', whose smile seemed wider than her face...if that's possible. Agreed this wasn't much of a match, but no doubt things will hot up in later rounds.

He would have needed to know his onions.
