The advantage of being called Smith.

Lotbinière, then, is in Canada and the name tacked on to that of M. Joly.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I think it picks up a quota of Oxbridge rejects (cf Durham).

For what it's worth, here's the background to 'The Name' (courtesy of - - the Mail):
Bartolomeo Cuthbert Joly de Lotbiniere has a brother named Bede Massimo, 15, and an 18-year-old sister named Aphra Antonia. His parents are Max, 52, and 51-year-old Amanda...The Joly de Lotbiniere surname was first formed 127 years ago by politician Sir Henri-Gustave Joly de Lotbiniere, the son of Huguenot businessman Pierre-Gustave Joly and Roman Catholic mother Julie-Christine Chartier de Lotbinière. He took on the double-barrelled name following the death of his mother in 1888. French-born Sir Henri-Gustave, who was also a lawyer and lived from 1829 to 1908, served as the Premier of Quebec, a federal cabinet minister in Canada and the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia.

Cuthbert and Bede? The parents enthusiasts of Anglo Saxon history, perhaps? (But not so far as to call their sister "Hilda"!)

                  (Let alone "Wallburga"!)

He should have gone to Durham.

                        Yes.

Whereas in the very early days it was merely Harriet Harman and Greg Dyke.

One wonders what a different surname may have achieved.

Lat-Lit Verisimilitude ap Betws y Coed or something similar.

As for Hilda, whenever I see that name my mind immediately leaps to Muriel.

There does appear to be a yellow duck (drake?) sitting alongside Mr Smith.
