Tippett, Turnage and Birtwhistle foil Peterhouse

York get Vaughan Williams, Messiaen and Sibelius but are dented by Shostakovich…

And they were all the only questions I would have got right! (oh, except one other: Turkey went to war against Germany in 1942 or something).

I got the musical notation but didn't recognise any of the music played we weren't even told what any of it was. Mr Powell seems to go through great pain trying to think of an answer, I can't bear to watch.

              - I was so hoping York would win, just to get rid of his gurning and drama queen antics. (That shrug whenever he gets something wrong, too ) Give him his due, though - the kid does know a LOT!

It's presumably too late for anyone to have a word with him, as it's pre-recorded.....

Paxman is getting very strict on the 5 point fines - when the scores were on 175-130 Mr Cole of York buzzed in just as Paxman was reading the last word of the question, and got it wrong. It was passed to the other side - and Paxman fined York 5 points even though there was no more of the question to read out. I supose it was an interruption, but only just....

But it is a pity that he is not as strict with time wasting prevarications over the team questions, as perfected yesterday by the team of drama queens.

The Messiaen excerpt was not easily identified, being from a very early work: the introduction from "L'Ascension" I think, thought it might have been "Hymne".

Quite, I've complained several times about this - #404, 416.....

Likewise. Unlike him, their lady captain was quite serene and unruffled and appeared not be taking the whole thing too seriously at all.

I'm pleased to hear that. I didn't get it. The rest of the music questions were all right.

I'm still rejoicing in my discovery that the full name of one of the York team is Bartolomeo Cuthbert Joly de Lotbiniere. That's even better than Gabriel Trueblood.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
