Were you tempted to keep it so that you could look at it now & again & see just what £15,000 looked like?

& yes, I use cheques, & accept cheques from buyers (even though they are no longer backed by a guarantee card).

#16 Flosshilde, certainly not, I kept it for several days before I could find time to get to the bank and pay it in, but I felt very nervous about having so much cash around the house. When I got to the bank (Barclays in Ascot) I took along the magazine with the advert to prove that it was the outcome of a genuine sale and that I hadnt just nicked it, but the teller didnt even blink. I later realised that being in Ascot meant they must get a lot of customers from the racecourse and were quite used to people coming in with large wads of winnings from betting on the geegees.

I think you're confusing punters with bookies.

I don't see why he could or should; for one thing, anyone paying anyone else in cash does not necessarily know anything about the payee's tax affairs and liabilities or how honestly or otherwise he/she might complete tax returns!

Anyway, for me, cheques went out with the ark although, being a composer, I would never refuse one!

Should the cheque now be phased out?
Certainly not! Just checking in my cheque book now and I find I have made recent payments to newsagent (monthly paper bill), union subs, Folio Society invoice, donation to local charity, boiler repair, gym membership, window cleaner, Elgar Society subs, donation to College Appeal, donation to charity at cousin's funeral, piano tuning (Steinways make their over-worked tuners collect cheques for them) and so endlessly on. In most cases there, cheques are the easiest form of payment.

I think that for the purposes of publicity, The National Lottery still issues a giant cheque to jackpot prizewinners and the Lottery distributors can also prepare a giant cheque

I've not issued a cheque for about five years but I have bought the occasional postal order

I use cheques to pay the Steinway piano tuner.

The plumber too, though he prefers cash.

Going off at a tangent, I understand that for concert purposes it is cheaper to hire a Fazioli (eg from Jaques Samuel) than it is a Steinway. I'm sure both accept cheques.....

surely you mean the STEINWAYpiano tuner .........

is that a trophy Joanna ?

my Stradivarius teacher always used to only accept cheques from Coutts (but would settle for a gold sovereign if we couldn't find the book)

Postal orders? That takes me back. I assume, Ams, that you send them to your nephew at Greyfriars to spend in the tuck shop?

                              10 bob notes.

Green shield stamp shops. Passed an afternoon, and you got a new toaster.
