Reading about it today in the Telegraph, it appears Benedict was very reluctant to be Pope in the first place and had wanted to retire at 75 but John-Paul refused to accept and he had to see J-P succumb to Parkinsons remaining in office until the end which obviously has bearing on his decision. He had a (new?) pacemaker installed 3 months ago and was looking frail and having to be wheeled up the nave so I think he was brave to say 'I've had enough, Arrivederla!'
Obviously this now sets a precedent for future Popes to quit when they want but what happens if a Pope becomes afflicted with dementia, can the Cardinals declare his tenure over and bundle him off on the grounds of diminished responsibility or is there ever a Deputy Pope who can take over?
Just a question which crossed my mind.
