If they do elect a Scottish Pope, we might end up with deep-fried communion wafers..... and they'd better secure the wine....
Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.

I'm sure Scotty will correct me if I'm wrong, but they already have secured the wine. Catholics don't get the wine during the Eucharist (unless it's a wedding or something very special). Only the priest gets the wine... Oh! that's the point, isn't it?

No, it'll come from the abbots of Buckfast Abbey

This is the Mr Pee that I really appreciate!

That said, don't you think that a Scottish Pope - provided that he (it would have to be a he, would it not, even today?) wasn't the kind of "conservative" that's widely anticipated the fill Ratso's worn-out shoes - might seek to bring about a change here by ordering the sale of all the stocks of communion wine and using the proceeds to purchase communion single malt to replace it?

If they follow my suggestion in #66, they'll make more than a fast buck therefrom! (not the closing exclamation mark; I seem to be getting better at those, with practice)...

Unfortunately I think that anybody in the position to become the first (?) Scottish Pope is likely to be even more conservative than Benni.

(I wonder when we'll get Joan II?)

I'm surprised no one appears to have mentioned the obvious choice for next Pope:

"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

They are usually offered it these days, true, but it's not strictly necessary, because, as St Thomas Aquinas carefully explained:

                          Sub diversis speciebus,
                          signis tantum, et non rebus,
                          latent res eximiae.
                          Caro cibus, sanguis potus:
                          manet tamen Christus totus
                          sub utraque specie.

In fact, you will see very conservative Catholics ostentatiously bypassing the chalice and going straight back to their seats after having received the wafer (on the tongue, of course).

These same people will also probably refuse to receive communion from a woman, even though she's only handing it out and has not presumed to attempt to consecrate it.

Why would I want to watch some old Queen in a variety of dodgy frocks telling the same old stories? After all, I saw Mrs Shufflewick LIVE

I seldom query S Thomas Aquinas , and I don't think he can be faulted here - but I have to say I've always thought there's a lot to be said in favour of intinction...
