    There's a garden centre near the Kent/Surrey border that sells exotic fruit trees. I've always been tempted to give it a go, but living in Yorkshire makes it an unrealistic proposition. I did buy an olive tree there and it survived for several years before being killed off by a severe winter.

      It's the wet more than the cold that kills them, I think, or rather cold & wet. Sharp frosts aren't so bad, and can be protected against by draping horticultural fleece over them. If you have a south-facing wall that can be used for growing more tender fruit trees.
