Thanks mercia: it worked (and I managed to avoid all the attempts to make me download other things). Certainly an insight into another world.

I have a minidisc somewhere of a short Academy of Ancient Music programme recorded for R3 years ago, with Patricia Hughes doing all the links. But I have no idea how I could upload it, which is a pity, as it gives a good idea of her own inimitable style.

a good life and much pleasure given to us ...

She was a truly modest lady. As a sound man from TV on a brief secondment to Radio 3, I was lucky enough to follow her through a recording session at St John's Smiths Square. She had just given some Jane Austen readings, and I said how much I enjoyed them. She replied by saying that she had not been sure whether they worked, as her voice may not have seemed right to some listeners !
She and Joy Worth were surely among the best announcers the BBC has ever had. I don't think that we are behind the times when we wish for some of that gentle gravity to return.

Sorry, the file has been removed for some reason by Mediafire. I'll email a copy to anyone who wants one and sends me a PM.

To be fair (to you!), it implies that the file has violated their terms of service...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Ah, thanks for the clarification, Caliban! But I would still like to hear that clip...

This is very sad news. She is one of the first announcers I remember hearing on Radio 3 and its predecessors.

I will try to listen to the clips when I get home this evening.

Me too - screen shot sent by PM.

                        Add - superseded.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

probably a stupid question, but what happened to those lunchtime concerts from St John's Smith Square ?
I used to listen to them quite regularly, as announced by PH
presumably they no longer take place

                            Andrew !

ASLEF, Ray Buckton, Moss Evans, Transport Secretary Mr William Rodgers ... It sounded as if everyone was on strike - or threatening it.

That's probably why the recording has survived! I only wish the tape had been long enough to record the whole bulletin!

'twas the 'Winter of Discontent', of course.

She is very fondly remembered by those of my era. I hope the present generation of announcers will listen to extracts of her work and perhaps realise how they get it so wrong. (Not to mention the editors/producers or whoever select these people and impose such a dreadful unsuitable style on them.)
