Thanks mercia: it worked (and I managed to avoid all the attempts to make me download other things). Certainly an insight into another world.

She was a truly modest lady. As a sound man from TV on a brief secondment to Radio 3, I was lucky enough to follow her through a recording session at St John's Smiths Square. She had just given some Jane Austen readings, and I said how much I enjoyed them. She replied by saying that she had not been sure whether they worked, as her voice may not have seemed right to some listeners !
She and Joy Worth were surely among the best announcers the BBC has ever had. I don't think that we are behind the times when we wish for some of that gentle gravity to return.

Andrew !
ASLEF, Ray Buckton, Moss Evans, Transport Secretary Mr William Rodgers ... It sounded as if everyone was on strike - or threatening it.It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

'twas the 'Winter of Discontent', of course.
Sorry, the file has been removed for some reason by Mediafire. I'll email a copy to anyone who wants one and sends me a PM.Last edited by Andrew Slater; 09-02-13, 17:24.

She is very fondly remembered by those of my era. I hope the present generation of announcers will listen to extracts of her work and perhaps realise how they get it so wrong. (Not to mention the editors/producers or whoever select these people and impose such a dreadful unsuitable style on them.)
