And so, since it is now almost certain to become law, can I ask how you will view all the marriages you already know of friends and relatives (and your own, if you are married)? Will they all be suddenly 'cheapened' in some way? And if so in what way?

If those who are so opposed object so much then its up to them to find another word for what they want to do. The nonsense that some of the so called "lords" spout about how this "threatens" society etc etc is just a load of bollocks , the last gasps of a dying bigotry and good riddance to them....

Whats the problem with change anyway ? If this is the "end of marriage as we know it" it's a good thing and anyway many of us regard our gay friends who have Civil Partnerships as Married anyway so is all this over a single word that some want to claim ? If so , I'm Married and it's my word too and i'm more than happy to share it with gay people as well as straight.

Can't have those nasty queers degrading us can we ? they have already stolen the word "gay" from us

      what utter utter nonsense
Civil Partnership was the long-overdue equalisation of what has been an injustice for many years. The rest is noise. Ideological noise to boot. The politics of revenge. And again, ner nicky ner ner, I bet I got more gay friends than you

So the mere act of campaigning for something itself devalues that which is being campaigned for? Until and unless both civil partnerships and marriages (two intentionally and necessarily different concepts and legal constructs) become available both to same sex and opposite sex couples, there will remain inequality which, to my mind at least, itself risks undermining - or even degrading and cheapening, as you so graphically put it - the value of either.

I didn't say that you were. It was you, not I, who raised the spectacle of xenophobia and, for that matter, I who wrote " I would never have guessed", from which the reasoning behind your asking why I might think that you're a xenophobe is well less than clear.

Never mind; it's got nothing to do with gay marriage, so please let's return to that, for no better reason than the fact that it's the thread topic.

Reassuring to see that the warm weather has brought on the Beefy-ahinton courtship rituals, seemingly wherever one looks this evening!

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
