And this was specifically as a result of their religious beliefs as judged heretical by the Dominican Inquisition - not due to revolt against the temporal order.

Of course, the state helped - The latter [the temporal order] resulted in thousands more being executed as at the siege of Béziers in 1209 - 7000 in total amounting to the entire population. Arnaud Amoury, the Cistercian abbot-commander wrote to the Pope:

"Today your Holiness, twenty thousand citizens were put to the sword, regardless of rank, age, or sex."
(it's not clear if the Cistercian abbot-commander was exercising temporal or spiritual power)

Perhaps scotty might let us know if the church has apologised or otherwise accepted that it was at fault?
I honestly don't know but unsavoury events occurring during the 13th Century do seem to me an awful long time ago to be demanding apologies, Flossie. Maybe you as an Englishman should apologise to me and every other Scot for the brutal hanging, drawing and quartering of that great Scottish hero, Sir William Wallace, around about the same time?

Predictably, you missed out the beginning of the article you gleaned from Wiki ...

<The Crusade (Albigensian) was prosecuted primarily by the French crown and promptly took on a political flavour, resulting in not only a significant reduction in the number of practicing Cathars but also a realignment of Occitania, bringing it into the sphere of the French crown and diminishing the distinct regional culture and high level ofAragonese influence.>

Sort of illustrates the point about the rather complicated mixture of interests of Church and State(s) in those far-off days, does it not ?

Which only provides an example of the way the church has been happy to work with & use the state to further it ends. It might have stopped burning people (or been complicit in burning people) but in very recent history the Catholic church has hardly been vocal in its condemnation of regimes that have tortured, maimed & killed.

Now what was that thing in the Bible about NOT killing people ??
Seems like that's an optional extra
but persecuting people for their sexuality isn't

As you say, we're now in the 21st century, so that in this instance your beloved "moral consistency and stability" is somehow not consistent or stable between 1600 and 2013. Therefore there's no way you can be sure that at some point in the next five hundred years (probably a lot sooner, I would think, once the present superannuated generation at the top is out of the way) the church won't decide that homosexuality is OK after all.

I am sure you've read Jerome K Jerome's 3 men in a boat (that's to say nothing of the dog). I quote thus:

I read the prescription. It ran:

                  “1 lb. beefsteak, with
                  1 pt. bitter beer
                  every 6 hours.
                  1 ten-mile walk every morning.
1 bed at 11 sharp every night.
And don’t stuff up your head with things you don’t understand.”

I followed the directions, with the happy result – speaking for myself – that my life was preserved, and is still going on.

This, I give to you MrGG, as the most useful steer any man can give another!

aaah But I understand perfectly ........ it really is all very simple (Unlike Xenakis's Formalised Music)

were the "three men" in some kind of Gay love triangle I wonder ?

or even 3 (and the rest) cardinals in a closet ?

In the words of mr Reich ................. (not mr Orgone either ! )

though it seems that some so called "christians" seem to see it like the menu at Wong Kei (with the legendary rude staff and menu with 1,000's of dishes)
