Yes, but, apparently, following the Union of Crowns in 1603 monarchs still held the title 'King/Queen of England" until the union of Parliaments in 1707. All very confusing, I know.

Not that it matters as most people today (outside Scotland) still refer to the 'Queen of England'.

Yes, I suppose so, though given the effective takeover by the Normans, you could regard the Plantagenets as being 'new' English. That's not something you can really say about the Welsh, Scots or Germans.

I liked some of the smart-ass comments on Radio 4 this morning such as .. 'archaeologists, digging on a hunch, are believed to have now found the remains of Richard III ...

thats not very good radio or even if it was on tv! In very bad taste, when you think that Richard III was the last of the Plantagenet monarchs to reign over England.(probably the greatest dynasty?)

I was very pleased to hear this news: as has been mentioned, it is THE news of the day. Chris Huhne is very small beer by comparison. Don't think he should be buried in Leicester, though: surely York will want to provide a resting place for one of its most (in)famous sons? (he was born in Northants, but you know what I mean....)

I'm now waiting for the chorus of leftists to perk up, denouncing him as an evil right-wing dictator and probable child-murderer, who was guilty of horrific human rights abuses as well as war crimes.....

then I will defend Richard III Plantagenet as "Not guilty as charged, M'lurd.".
IMO one of the greatest kings we never had. At least he was a brilliant, dedicated and loyal governor for the north of England.

Yes the hunch-back / horse combination should lead to a number of arrests by the humour police..

I would also defend him. He was very popular on his home turf, by all accounts, though it's hard to judge his reign on the basis of a mere 26 months.

I think Shakespeare paid him a bit of a back-handed compliment, really.

The latest information suggests that he DID murder the Princes in the Tower, and then tried to blame his wife.

How sadly, and predictably, ill-informed you are. It's that lick-spittle propagandist WS who is to blame for all the calumny heaped on that fine monarch. He was most likely not even responsible, well not directly so, for the death of Henry VI. Lefties are far more likely to speak up in support of Richard III than to swallow the Shakespearean myth.
