Agreed with you there Petrushka, about it being dioscussed by all interested parties but did'nt I hear, correctly, that York Minster doint want him?

Though, as someone pointed out, they are only nine very distant relations from among thousands, similarly distantly related.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I am sympathetic in principle but apparently the Ministry of Justice gave permission to Leicester University for the dig and so the decision lies with the University. I doubt if the Min of J gave a moments thought to the possibility that the hare-brained scheme would actually succeed. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/s...scendants.html

My own view, mooted above somewhere was for the Queen to decide in consultation with all interested parties.
If he is buried at Leicester I hope that the simple slab that is there is used as his gravestone. Apparently the RIII Society is designing a tomb - I can't help feeling that it will be rather grandiose & rather inappropriate.

This is it. They say they will raise the £30,000.

It's not that bad, is it?

But they should save some of the money for the music.

I notice that there is an update on the Richard III documentary on More4 tomorrow night at 9pm.

No, but as there is a more than adequate stone already ... . Perhaps they should have incorporated it in the new design (I wonder who was responsible for commissioning/paying for the existing one? The RIII Society?).

There's no mention that I can see on the cathedral website. It was placed there in 1980

                  The wording is:

                  Richard III King of England
Killed at Bosworth Field in this County
                  22nd August 1485
Buried in the Church of the Grey Friars
                  In this Parish

And it's a strongish argument that he was buried in the parish, not taken to York, after the battle.

Actually, looking at it again, I think it is 'that bad' - rather in the way that Charles' Poundbury is 'that bad'. The present stone is simple, dignified & contemporary, but at the same time timeless. Perhaps the RIII Society want something 'significant' that would be a suitable goal for a pilgrimage, or for the annual ceremony marking his death that they will no doubt instigate.

FF, welolo thgat's not as nbad as I thought it was going to be!¬ I(inline with the period.) Quoite frankly RIII's descendants should have more say in this. Mind you, I think I would've been a 3rd cousin backi then, so I probably would have counted?)

"...the isle is full of noises,

Yes, you would have been as close, if not closer, than many. But Richard himself had no lineal descendants from his three children (two illegitimate, one legitimate, died aged 10). And collateral descendants, now living, must number thousands, in fact millions if you go back far enough. How do you establish what 'they' want?

The nine who signed this letter seem all to be mostly close members of two or three (closely related?) families. Who knows but that they didn't natter about it over family Christmas dinner? I don't see that their wishes need take precedence.

Here you see how close to the cathedral Richard was originally buried (the black dot is where the remains were found).

Thank you FF, I saw that picture; he should be buried at Leicester. It makes more sense. And like I said in another post, I think it be more appropriate, as he was slain at Bosworth.
