    Richard the Third

I've just been watching the press conference where the University of Leicester have confirmed that the remains found under a council car park are those of Richard the 3rd, the last Plantaganet King of England. I think this an amazing discovery, and kudos to those who pursued the excavation, initially on very slim evidence indeed. There is to be a documentary on Channel 4 at 9pm tonight following the whole story right from the beginning.

The wounds found on the remains leave one in little doubt as to the violent nature of his death, and the mistreatment and further wounding of the body even after his demise, not to mention the perfunctory nature of the burial. He is to be re-interred with more dignity in Leicester Cathedral some time next year. That will truly be a historic occasion.

I think this is very exciting, but the BBC News Channel seems much more interested in Chris Huhne. I missed the announcement and want to know more.

      Interesting, isn't it?:

He was of course the last English monarch, though I haven't seen any commentator mention that.

I know, both Sky news and the BBC cut away to Chris Huhne, just as the archeologists were going to give us the very first slide of the actual remains!!

I managed to follow the remainder via the red button, after a few moments of swearing at the TV....

Perhaps you could catch up with it on YouTube somewhere, or via the BBC/Sky news websites?

I think that may have been Queen Anne, Pab ... ?

Richard III was the last English monarch to die in battle, I understand.

Surely that was Harold II (d.1066)?

Or even Edgar the Atheling, who reigned after Hastings and before William's lot reached London. Yes, I suppose so, though given the effective takeover by the Normans, you could regard the Plantagenets as being 'new' English. That's not something you can really say about the Welsh, Scots or Germans.

A fitting end for someone who died for lack of horsepower to end up stuck in a carpark?
