And how about skipping London altogether. Newcastle-Plymouth anyone?

All this will do is boost house prices in Cheshire and Leeds, as the London commuter belt shifts ever further north.

The north can have the commuter belt as far as I am concerned !

It should go through The Potteries, rather than Crewe. But although this may be a vanity project for Dave and George, it should built, and built without this ridiculous delay. Imagine the French, Germans, Spanish, Belgians and Italians planning a railway they don't intend building for 14 years.

The next train out of Euston tonight to Manchester takes 2 hours 6 minutes.
        Not bad really.

the last train to Manchester seems to be 10.00 PM.
        is that right?

        if so, that is feeble.

I don't have a problem with a high speed railway, but there are more important priorities IMO.

you can go from York to Manchester airport all night

Here's a quick map of the route, just to remind us. It's pretty accurate, I think:-

last train to Salisbury 11.40 Pm which is fair enough.
last one to Southampton, just after midnight.

Good map, Mr P, but you missed out "here be Dragons" somewhere.

Also, according to Resurrection Man, the north is a World Heritage site, and there is a £16 admission fee, (like westmister Abbey) so that will have to be added to the fare.

Clegg failed to get Sheffield a station even - Sheffield will get an interchange at Meadowhall - a nightmare idea .

This article from today's DT gets it absolutely spot on in my view: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/finance...the-good-news/

All this should have been done years ago but it is indeed yesterday's solution to tomorrow's problems.

Apparently new lines do have to be built, owing to under-capacity on existing lines, said a govt mininster on the box tonight. No doubt ticket prices will be unaffordable, other than to business executives.
