Crossrail always strikes me as a white elephant. It would have been better if the tunnel between Paddington and Liverpool Street had passed through Euston and King's Cross/St Pancras, enabling InterCity trains from the west of England to connect with mainline services to the north and with Eurostar. As it is, all we will have is another (and hugely expensive) commuter line.

Maybe not, but I hope ts didn't mean that word! I shalln't elaborate further. This whole rail thing strikes me as a demonstration of absolute incompetence by those notionally able to affect things. Why I should care about a rail system which will either be inaugurated "after I've gone" or when I'll probably be too old to want to bother anyway?

On the one hand we get told that we have had and have a very serious economic crisis, something which I was for quite a time sceptical of, but now believe was probably pretty much true and did/does need tackling. On the other hand the same politicians are being economical with the truth about deficit reduction and debt, and yet they still think it's a good idea to try to forward plan to spend money that we are unlikely to have in order to obtain a very marginal future benefit in the transport sector. "Superman" has so far failed completely to significantly stimulate the economy, and if there has been a deficit reduction it is very small, and the ongoing debt has increased. The only good thing about embarking on an expensive but currently misguided infrastructure scheme is that the notional saving if it is cancellled or restructured at a future date can be even greater! Funny money - with the "right" accounting!

An admirable sentiment. I see you follow the proud tradition of disguising the word. The very first written appearance of the word in English is disguised. It's is in a poem known as Flen, flyys and freris (Fleas, flies and friars) dating from about 1475. It's written in English and 'dog Latin' and is very rude about the Carmelite friars of Ely - "Non sunt in coeli, quia gxddbov xxkxzt pg ifmk". It's a simple code that deciphers as "fvccant vvivys of heli", or "they are not in heaven because they **** the wives of Ely".

Interestingly, it's not an Anglo-Saxon word at all, though we usually think of it so. It is Germanic, though (the same can be said for the C-word*, which didn't enter English till about 1200).

Odd how these things come back to me.

*[Or to Chaucer, the Q-word and K-word as well. He spells it five different ways in The Canterbury Tales, to the regular surprise of anyone from Kent.]

Indeed after a few seconds thought that section of text is easily seen to be in the form of a Caesar cipher, with an increment of 1. I am not totally convinced though. Can we be sure that you aren't trying to perpetuate an urban legend, or indeed to create one? There is a reference to related urban legends here - http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/fo...40/316176.html There is "evidence" from Wikipedia here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flen_flyys - but unfortunately that by itself cannot be relied upon to verify authenticity. Indeed, at present the article contains a warning that there is limited evidence of its truthfulness, with no verified citations etc. For electronic verification of veracity some more elaborate form of authentication might be required, perhaps based on yet more complex ciphers, message digests and PKI.

good and entertaining knowledge , Pabs.

trouble is I was probably wrong. The people who really run the country do know exactly what they are doing, and are very smart indeed. They just use idiots like Osborne to do their work.......

And who might they be? Presumably they are so clever they don't identify themselves.

It's always right to be sceptical. However, the Wikipedia article does say that the poem is to be found in British Library, Harley MS 3362, and was first published in T. Wright & J. O. Halliwell, Reliquiæ Antiquæ (1841) 1.91.

Then there's this from Michael Quinion:

There are many supposed origins for Fuck, mostly strained acronyms. None, it transpires, are true.

well banks for a start. Since at the big EU conference Dave said that he wouldn't do anything that hurt them, I would guess they are pretty influential, behind the scenes, to say the least. The 0.1% transaction tax was effectively halted.
Big companies whose corporation tax contribution is collapsing. Not at all powerful? not calling the shots?

If you want to see who is making the big calls, I would look at outcomes, not rhetoric.

If you want to see who benefits from the fracking revolution, have a look at who is running it.Clue: it's a man who is employed by the government to develop fracking AND is chairman of a company holding fracking licenses.

You're not a follower of David Icke as well as Nigel Farage, are you?

followers of David Icke knew all about Saville and bad stuff at the BBC before most other people.

an Icke/farage party would be electorally unstoppable.
Plus I bet they would stop HS2 and spend the money on sensible projects.

I'm not saying it's incorrect, but I can't verify this right now. I noticed the reference to the British Library, but I suspect I'd actually have to go there to check. The Quinion article seems to have very similar material to the link I provided. I also pointed out that the Wikipedia article contains a warning about unsubstantiated "facts". This doesn't mean the article is incorrect, but that it has insufficient authenticity at present.
