It's curious isn't it how these old cliches come trotting out.
"Sputtering colonels" is an image straight out of Wodehouse or Waugh - and at least 50 years out of date. Any retired colonels these days would have served in N.Ireland, the Falklands, Afghanistan etc. My guess is that few if any of these would "sputter". Rip your face off, yes, but never sputter.
"Daily Telegraph readers". As if this signified anything at all, except that saying "Daily Mail reader" would apparently tick the wrong box - not "elitist" enough.
My vote is that malcolmtalcum is a BBC employee. Resurrecting a very old Guardian (BBC house paper) extract and linking it with some inside knowledge smells mighty fishy.O Wort, du Wort, das mir Fehlt!
