It's curious isn't it how these old cliches come trotting out.

"Sputtering colonels" is an image straight out of Wodehouse or Waugh - and at least 50 years out of date. Any retired colonels these days would have served in N.Ireland, the Falklands, Afghanistan etc. My guess is that few if any of these would "sputter". Rip your face off, yes, but never sputter.
"Daily Telegraph readers". As if this signified anything at all, except that saying "Daily Mail reader" would apparently tick the wrong box - not "elitist" enough.

My vote is that malcolmtalcum is a BBC employee. Resurrecting a very old Guardian (BBC house paper) extract and linking it with some inside knowledge smells mighty fishy.

A reference to the "Pronunciation Watch" Thread, perhaps?

Perhaps he is a 90 year old ex member of the BBCSO. As I remarked earlier his user name is what they unkindly called Sargent who put talcum on his sweaty face when a concert was televised.

No, I think not. I think I've now cracked this one. I say no more . Pretty sneaky, I'd say.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Which will, I'm sure, be reasonably short.

Interesting - that's apparently what Red Kites were called way back. As they principally feed on carrion they were mostly found in cities picking over the middens.

What's the point of being in the "elite" if you can't use it?!?

Heh, heh but I say no more ... But I assume, then, that you've cracked it too - no names, no packdrill.

I haven't cracked it. Not even a tiny clue- not someone using a second name I hope.
