It's curious isn't it how these old cliches come trotting out.

"Sputtering colonels" is an image straight out of Wodehouse or Waugh - and at least 50 years out of date. Any retired colonels these days would have served in N.Ireland, the Falklands, Afghanistan etc. My guess is that few if any of these would "sputter". Rip your face off, yes, but never sputter.
