No, nothing to do with the ninth. Your ill-advised and unpleasantly forceful put-down of the Haas version of Bruckner 8 might have something to do with it.

i've heard that on a clear day you can actually see (and smell !!) it from Dover

Though I think (given your form in this area ) you probably need a bigger map

I know- it is close isn't it. I think Mr.GG hasn't realised that the blue stuff that surrounds us on that map is sea water.

Ah - well, thanks for the clarification. Dr Simpson and I might be to differ on this, then, but that does not mean that I think that I "know better" than him; it is, after all, well known that people tended to try to interfere with Bruckner's symphonic vision more than has ever been the case with most composers. I didn't "take advice" on my remarks on the Haas 8, nor was my remark either forceful, or a total put-down or even instigated by me but in response to Bryn's comments. Try to revert to arguing your kipper case if you must; at least it's on topic, sort of; the party statistics that I presented are at least correct rather than a matter of personal opinion.

MrGG might not have O-Level Geography, but he's got an O-Level in Henry V

Europe doesn't exist, though the EU clearly does.
I've bored people to death for many years challenging the convention than Europe is a continent, which it clearly is not - merely the western bit of Asia.
It seems that the Bosporus is responsible, having been close to where the earliest reasonable world maps were made. That was where the division between the continents was first made, but the Black Sea is really quote small, so later the artificial boundary between the so-called continents was drawn through the Caspian Sea and any mountain ranges that could be found - the Urals and the Caucasus. So imprecise is this arrangement that no-one is really sure whether Mont Blanc or Mt.
Elbrus is the highest mountain in the "continent" of Europe.

So when Turkey joins the EU, Mount Ararat will be the highest mountain?

No that's Everest, much further to the east of our huge continent of Eurasia.
But further to your point, Israel regards itself as European when it suits them; e.g. The Eurovision Song Contest.

Where did you get that map? They can't even spell "Edinburgh".

The English Channel is more of a sort of permanent flood water.

The pro-European Romans had little difficulty in boating across it, though they came a right cropper further north.

I heard a youngish man interviewed on television yesterday protesting that we are much closer to America than Europe.

Mmmmmmmmm ... fancy a couple of solo boat rides, kiddo ... ?
