Jayne Lee Wilson, and others suffering from the cold indoors,

I suggest my own preferred tool against chill air--an electric throw blanket. Even in a warm climate the winter nights can be chilly when one is relaxing at home of an evening. I use my electric throw nightly. Hint: for even better heat retention, I sometimes add a second throw atop. I took a look at Amazon UK to see that these corded throws are available in a range of prices. Now, where's the closest wall outlet?!

        It's (deep breath....)

Wegie with an "e" not weegie with an "ee"
'Cos wegie with an "e" is SKOG not SCOT...

look, it's too late to find all the rhymes now, and there might be time for some Lutoslawski before bed, so...

Here in the Philippines it's been very cold. People have been complaining about it and wearing cardigans (admittedly, cotton ones, not woollen) - it's a big talking-point. Daytime temperatures have fallen as low as 21 degrees C! It's 26 degrees at the moment, which is still quite cool.

          Keep warm!

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.

My firends in Oz are experiencing temps of around 40C, which have been publiscised in the press recently.

Isn't it funny how quickly you can go off somebody.

Very striking call, "kew, kew!". A quick google reveals that they bred in a Liverpool park in 2011, so I suspect there's a small population in Liverpool now, as there is in Manchester. They're totally unfazed by the Magpies who mobbed them at first but soon gave up - no response from the cool paras... smaller birds don't worry about them, but they're too big to share a dispenser with...
Jayne, I can assure you the novelty will soon wear off when they reach the pest proportions they have on, for example, Hampstead Heath. Looks as if the RSPB's distribution map needs updating. There's concern about them monopolising suitable nest sites that have previously been used by other species. The RSPB has a policy statement on the subject. Some Hampstead Heath birdwatchers are very grumpy indeed about them, though Bill Oddie doesn't seem to mind them.

And there are suggestions they are causing damage to vineyards in SE England

Actually the cold weather is making me quite cheerful - cold weather movements of birds make for exciting birdwatching in the west .

... we've had lots of the parakeets in W12 for quite a few years now. Our birdologist friends are divided 50:50 as to whether they like them here or not.

I think they are a happy addition to the skies of Shepherd's Bush.

On the subject of birds perhaps it's appropriate to mention the annual RSPB Birdwatch takes place this weekend (I've taken part for some years) You simply have to count numbers and species of birds in a one hour time slot. Details here: http://www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch/how.aspx

Ah yes, silly me, a few miles can make all the difference to the weather, can't it?
