    Spot on, EA.
There is plenty of room for mixed feelings. Sometimes I think that people like HG are where salvation lies. Sometimes I think he is part of , and symptomatic of a problem.
I am confused by my own thoughts, and his activities. Perhaps its the effect of a day at work !
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

from what I gather I think his new series partly sets out to demonstrate they are closer than we might think, and have grown out of eachother
That was my point about the colour spectrum. And colours can be endlessly mixed to give greeny blues and bluey reds. But though on the spectrum they merge into each other, we still perceive red and green to be 'different', and we as individuals choose between them for all sorts of reasons.

But that's about as technical as it gets. If colours are just colour to some people and they have no other significance, I've yet to meet anyone who fits that description.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Indeed, I, for instance, find HG's signature tune for QI very catchy and suited to its job. I would not expect anyone to confound it with 'classical music'. It's relates to a different part of the musical spectrum.

But the Shepherd's Pie is probably more nutritious food than the other two.

I think today is 'Black Monday', when the time since the Christmas holiday, state of one's bank account, credit card bills coming home to roost, the weather, & various other factors combine to induce depression in the country as a whole.

I would need help to distiguish a crotchet from a minim, and off hand I wouldn't know whether Greig pre, or postdated Tchaikovsky. However I have pleasure pads that respond to all kinds of music. I just made a list of a few examples which sprung to mind ....
                7 Seas of Rhye, Queen
The Pie Jesu (I think) in Faure's Requiem
                Tinariwen
Vincenzo Bellini I Puritani – O, Rendetemi la speme Maria Callas (Thanks Martin Carthy)
                Amy Peate Orange Bicycle
Slaidburn (Rimmer) Brighouse & Rastrick Band
Symphonic Dances No. 2 by Grieg

All of these touch different pleasure pads for very different reasons. I have no patience with people who tell me any piece of music is more or less worthy of merit because it belongs to a certain classification.
HG, in his last series went some way towards explaining why my pleasure pads work, and I hope his new series will continue down that road.

I think green peppers are more bitter.

I've just made some bite-size mushroom pasties for the book group meeting tonight.

Which reminds me of the Zen guest's remark following an evening's discussion on Buddhism at John Cage's home, included in "Silence": "That's what I like so much about philosophy: no one wins!"

Not to mention quarterly electricity bills.

I thought this thread might have been resurrected now Mr. Goodall is well into his stride.

This more specific thread is probably preferable to continue the many comments on HG's current series: http://www.for3.org/forums/showthrea...all-on-BBC-Two
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
