I was working through the comments on the link to the DT story about CG and I'm asking myself what is in the rancourous and malign spirit that very quickly can emerge on various forums, often in threads on relatively benign subjects.

On there, there are the most spiteful and vile remarks.

It was a tendency that was on the predecessor to this forum, the BBC R3 forum, but the begrudgers seemed not to come across to For3, so much.

Is it the anonymity that makes some contributor be so horrible? The fact that they can vent without fear of societal reproach.

I just think we are grown adults, usually past a certain age and it's amazing that some can't resist the urge to baton one another other with their walking sticks, or kick their zimmer frames.

Those examples are meant to be ageist but it is the kind of behaviour that one might expect in a retirement home. At least there, people have the excuse of the frustration they feel at their diminishing faculties.

I wasn't going to peruse this thread at all because I thought that it would be about Charlotte someone else (think building designed and used for ecclesiastical purposes) but I'm glad that I've now done so. I've seen no spiteful or vile remarks anywhere about Charlotte Green and would be horrified to do so. What's the matter with some people? She's made a memorable and distinctive contribution to BBC R4 over more than a quarter of a century and, like others here, am sure that she will be sorely missed.

That's like a red rag to forum bull, surely ...

From my perspective, and apart from sheer professional competence, Charlotte Green had the sultriest, sexiest-sounding voice on the BBC, alongside a rich sense of humour. Just compare her to some of the high-pitched tweeting, twittering 'OMG' little things we tend to get these days.

        Good luck, Charlotte!

I now avoid reading the comments at the end of the Comment is Free pieces, and others, on the Guardian website for those reasons. I assume that there are people who do this, regardless of whether they read the 'paper' as a whole, as a kind of hobby. There must be even more vituperative ones, since many are removed by the mods.
