Riccardo Chailly has sprung to mind. After all, he's only just very recently conducted them?
If it were Chailly, he would be following two illustrious predecessors in taking over the chief position at the BPO when in charge of the Gewandhaus orchestra: Nikisch and Furtwängler (though those two also continued to hold the Leipzig principal conductor position).

I'd be inclined to bet on either Chailly or Jurowski. Thielemann would be too much of a throwback after Rattle's drive to modernise the repertoire of the orchestra.

when footballers are rumoured to be signing for Southampton they are always sighted either in a taxi at the airport, or Macdonalds in Shirley Road.

So Hurn and burger joints in Boscombe may be worth keeping an eye on..... .

But isn't that what the BPO membership wants? Does anyone know the inner workings of the BPO? Is it like the LSO where members' opinions count, or are administrators on a separate plane? If the latter, count on someone unlikely.

I thought that too, but he's 60 already (Simon will be 58 Saturday week) so will be 65 when SS leaves. Would Semyon be physically up to it?

Boston Symphony? Vienna State Opera? Lucerne? CBSO???

Personally, I think he will freelance but if he does then it's not really the Rattle philosophy is it?

Andris Nelsons would be a very interesting choice indeed. Chailly was also a name that came to mind and, by coincidence, is conducting them this very evening.

I'd go for someone much younger, and highly adventurous, namely Ilan Volkov. Now he would be a very daring choice.
