So who will be the Berlin Phil.'s music director once Sir Simon leaves?
Given Norman Lebrecht's recent track record with rumours one wonders what credibility should be given to his views.
Counting me - two wonder....
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
Thielemann is second rate IMO - Andris Nelssons top class .
Hiya Barbirollians,
I'm in Dresden at the moment and last Monday I saw Thielemann conduct the Staatskapelle Dresden most splendid Bruckner 4. They love him here. I notice that he rarely ventures outside the core Austro/German repertoire.
"The rumour comes in Die Welt.... the players have chosen Kirill Petrenko, music director of the Bavaria State Opera. The Berlin Phil press office has promised ‘more tomorrow’ in an email to Slipped Disc.
Independent of his report we were informed last week that Petrenko had been offered the job on election day and turned it down."

One link from Die Welt is here. A really bad and quick reworking of Google Translator goes:
"The election of a new chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic remains without result. But apparently on Sunday, the orchestra had launched a second attempt to elect a successor to Simon Rattle. Accurate, however, was not elicit. The press office said only on request, before the summer recess from 29 July, there might be still a General Assembly. From another source, however, it was said that on Sunday, they had chosen the Russian conductor Kirill Petrenko, General Music Director of the Bayerische Staatsoper. This got canceled. Faced with this, the press office of the Philharmonic said to Die Welt: "We can comment tomorrow, not today."
Given the May 11 debacle non-announcement, one would hope that the Berlin Philharmonic would not talk about this to anyone, least of all Lebrecht, until they actually have a conductor fully lined up, with all arrangements signed, sealed and delivered. If they were really dumb enough to e-mail Lebrecht, that really makes my opinion of their good sense go downhill. Plus, it would be funny if it weren't so infuriating to read in Lebrecht's 'tweet' the characterization of Manuel Brug (whose name Lebrecht misspells, of course) as someone "who can be unreliable". Pot, meet kettle?
One important bit of that translation is wrong: "Der habe aber abgesagt" doesn't mean "This got canceled" but "But he declined" ... i.e. the job offer the Berliners had allegedly made to him.

Worth repeating, for certain of the honourable members!
And congratulations to Stanfordian for being the only one in this entire thread to even mention Kirill Petrenko !!
(Assuming I've used 'search thread' correctly. Ok, bluestateprommer quoted from an article which mentioned him, but Stan actually included him among his favoured candidates! http://www.for3.org/forums/showthrea...218#post485218 )
"...the isle is full of noises,

If anyone now comes along and says "So then, Petrenko's leaving Liverpool for Berlin", I shall scream !!

Hey Cals, you are usually ITK.Is it right what I hear about Karabits abandoning Bourno fort he BPO? prolly worried about being outshone by all those PL stars coming to town.....
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I think Vasily is a wonderful conductor and I'm delighted he's staying in Liverpool - but aside from earlier passing references (where I mentally registered a melding of Vasily and Karabits) I don't think I've ever encountered KP - or even heard of him - before! Anyone else?
And, it's happened at last (a little earlier than I was expecting) - even the Principal Conductor of the BPO is younger than I am these days!
