We have 3D because my new TV and Blu Ray units support it, but they were not bought for that reason. There is very little really good stuff available in 3D on Blu Ray DVD, and what there is on sale is mostly dull documentaries from American sources. One good example is the David Attenborough documentary on the World of Plants, which makes effective use of slow motion and really draws you in to the subject. Another excellent use of the technology is Martin Scorsese's entertaining film Hugo, probably the best I have seen so far.
All in all, I don't think 3D adds much, if the story is told well, it doesn't need it, but perhaps it's early days. The possibility is there, but we need directors like Scorsese with the imagination to use it well.
Some films, like Titanic, were not shot in 3D, but doctored afterwards to give them a new lease of life, so you have to be careful what to buy if you want original 3D material
As for Her Majesty, we had the worst of both worlds, a boring presentation ( as ever! ) and poor visuals. It was crippled as usual by good taste, and at the same time it was obvious that much of the review of the year shots were not stereoscopic at all, but had been doctored to give the effect. Incidentally, why does the old girl find it so hard to produce a smile ?
