A bit pricey, but there's not much choice.

I'm going to bend the rules slightly and confine my choice to my favourite by British Composers (in alphabetical order - not preference)

      Edward Elgar: Cockaigne

      John Ireland: A London Overture

Leo Norman: Overture to a Picaresque Comedy

      Arthur Sullivan: Iolanthe

      Ralph Vaughan Williams: The Wasps

      William Walton: Portsmouth Point

Any alternative suggestions for each of the above?

Thanks very much for that, Pabmusic. From the single review, it sounds like it's worth the expense.

And six ‘one-offs’ that I love:

MacCunn – The Land of the Mountain and the Flood
          Lilburn – Aotearoa
Prokofiev – Overture on Hebrew Themes
Rosza – Overture to a Symphony Concert
          Gershwin – Cuban Overture
Boieldieu – The Caliph of Bagdad

A few overtures for William Shakespear's plays:

            Nicolai: Merry Wives of Windsor

            Berlioz: King Lear

            Tchaikovsky: Hamlet (also The Tempest)

            Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night's Dream

            Beethoven: Coriolanus

            Dvoral: Othello

Perhaps it's time for antongould to pick the pieces he decides to put on his Breakfast list, hoping a few rarities will vary the menu a little.

One can only hope that the BBC will respond.

And I'm surprised at the number of overtures I don't know well. Time to explore perhaps

I think it was chosen on "your Call " at a weekend recently.

Simply copied from people's entries - you tube attachments without titles or entries without composers ignored re-enter if you wish - no smileys in future if possible.
This will probably be the last time I do this as I am teaching salymap Excel 2007 by PM! Will update if more entries arrive.

I'm really looking forward to hearing this one. Twice.

Dear Anton, while I was sleeping you were working all night at this. But if we choose by the number of requests it looks as though we will get the usual suspects. How is it to be done.? And unfortunately saly is now too old to take in any new skills such as Excel 2007.

                              Thanks a lot.

Err, what happened to my friend Remo Lauricella's overture 'Fleet Street' ? Although as it was never recorded AFAIK it's academic.

Ooh very sorry. i see it's under his Christian/first name.

The Proms could usefully explore the overture.
