One I heard on PM recently: "long and drawn out".

      [Be creative: invent a tautology?]
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

The BBC's Jon Sopel has at last used the right word when describing Trump's view of Teresa May's premiership. He's UNDERMINING her, not UNDERCUTTING her (even though he could be accused of cheap tricks).

... but surely Wiltshire still has potato picking week as an extra holiday in October?

What, with Michael Ball, Scott Walker and Sixties soul!

I’ll settle for Beach Boys and Summer of Love!

Yeah, well not a bad idea, although not maybe the Ball.

I’m in a country rock groove right now, so it may be Byrds and similar.

I have triumphed in cheating the national Haloumi crisis and have plentiful supplies .

No potatoes till october round here though.......

I happened to be chatting ( on business ) to a Grand Fromage at a very high profile visitor attraction recently, one intimately connected with the armed services. Suffice to say, he wasn't impressed with the nonsense which now surrounds such matters, as routine.
The goverment document on safety to which that links includes the phrase 'stadia and arenas' Surely that should either be 'stadiums and arenas', or 'stadia and arenae'?

It's a bit like the referendums/referenda debate. Stadiums because stadia indicates something different (the plural of stadium, a measurement variously calculated at a length of somewhere in the region of 500ft).
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Or, as a distinguished contributor to these threads has commented (in a different context): writing [e.g.] stadia 'merely advertises that you had a classical education'. Like putting full points in e.g., come to that.

                              I've never understood that phrase.

I do that, but that's how I thought it was written If people wrote eg online, I'd mentally place it in the same category as i for I. Not that that indicates any special opinion as to correctness - just how online intercommunication has developed. But I would alter i to I if I noticed that I'd written it.
