Ah, but surely that's customarily shortened to five: "Amsmiffnsi'ee"?

... o, I may've been in Hemmersmith for the larst forty years - but the natives still think it's Ammersmiff. I don't think Sir Velo has it right - there are still - always - three syllabubs in Ammersmiff

I'll bow to your local knowledge on this one although my experience of cockneys is that they'll abbreviate any word as far as is feasibly possible!

Which reminds me...anyone care to take a punt as to in which part of the globe Arijaba lies?

Oh thanks for that, vints - I'd not seen it before. Wonderful!

I believe Gustav Holst joined when he lived in them parts.

Gustav Holst (1874-1934): Hammersmith op.52 (1930) - Royal Scottish National Orchestra diretta da David Lloyd-Jones

              ... yes indeedy -

I'm sad that one of Mme v's daughters attended St Paul's Girls' School - but was so unmusical as to be completely unaware of Holst's presence...

We frequently fly over. I always enjoy the view of the church, now pristinely restored. We should stop off and visit it some time.

                  .

... a pedant wd point out that the 'St Paul's' of the boys' and girls' schools refers to St Paul's Cathedral - the boys' school originated there. I think it's a coincidence that the (rather nondescript) church in Hammersmith (by/under the Hammersmith Flyover) is also a St Paul's...

New tooth-sucker from the captain of HMS Queen Elizabeth, the navy's new aircraft carrier. I sincerely hope he has been misquoted!
"She is four-and-a-half acres of British power projection, she is a sea base, she is part of the UK that you can put anywhere in the world without impunity."
Some will think this an accurate summary of the collapse of our standing worldwide I suppose
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Politician/'Expert' (somewhat patronisingly) to Interviewer: 'That is a really good question ... '

('Thanks, that is a really obvious question which I have been fully expecting and have already prepared my answer.' )

Not sure I agree. It's more often a question that I'm going to avoid by answering the one I wanted you to ask.

                            Precisely!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Similarly "I'm glad you asked that question".

I'm still going to give you my prepared answer to the question I wanted you to ask!

That is no doubt true in a number of responses but it is also true that others respond with an almost ill-disguised smug satisfaction when asked an obvious question for which they are well-prepared. So it is indeed a 'good question' to them!

However, whether the pre-prepared "answer" actually answers the question is another matter altogether, I agree!
