I'm putting it down to an aberration which I think we'll disregard ...

For some reason, I don't like the much-used here 'spot on' which is a quid pro quo for the 'absolutely' suggestion which I do tend to use. However, I've been muttering it to myself, sort of role-playing, and think I usually say, Yes, absolutely; or Absolutely, yes. But 'spot on' ...
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

It occurs to me that the use of some, about, or approximately could be avoided by the use of the suitably vague "the better part of a good few".

Food for thought there, perhaps your people and my people could get together to sort it out.

In case anyone was wondering what vindepays and I were on about, I've discovered to my delight that the relevant sketches are on trusty youtube. Here is an example:

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I just love the gypsy character Paul Whitehouse does on that programme - amazing bit of make-up.

                      Twenty Twelve.

                      AAAAGGGHH!!!!!!

Fair enough if all the other years were pronounced like this. But we’ve had

                      Two Thousand and Ten

                      Two Thousand and Eleven

                      Twenty Twelve

Why Twenty Twelve? Because it sounds cool? Trendy? This is OUR year!!?!

Conjuring up events like the Jubilee

                      Football

                      Olympics

Well. It’s been a tragic year for me.
                      And it rained all summer.

And worse of all. Couldn’t even put my bike on the train during the Olympics!

                      Twenty Twelve my xxxx.

Certainly. Shall we say, in due course, or in the fullness of time?

I seem to recall plenty of uses of twenty-ten and twenty-eleven. I don't think twenty-twelve is unique- maybe it's just impinged more onto our consciousness because of the brilliant TV series of the same name.

but sorry it's been a tragic year for 3VS

                              as merckx has indicated -

                              1066 ten sixty six

                              I wd add

                              1492 fourteen ninety two
                              1666 sixteen sixty six
                              1789 seventeen eighty nine
                              1805 eighteen - o - five
                              1939 nineteen thirty nine
                              2012 twenty twelve

                              ... sounds right to me.

I think we were led astray by that fillum "2001... ", which people insisted on calling "two thousand and one", when clearly it shd've been "twenty - o - one"...
