A moment of meta-madness. I blame les huîtres that I had for lunch. Or the wine. Or the pre-prandial G'n'T...

There is a 'no blame' culture in this Forum!

          I'll have a large one, if you're offering !!

A phrase that sets my teeth on edge, and that we've heard way too much of from certain quarters recently:- "Israeli aggression", when the phrase should really be "Israeli defence."
Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.

                  Hmmm.

Ah, yes - as even President Obama has said publicly, Israel must "defend itself". Against what? Its own aggression? That seems to be as plausible an answer as any. If indeed the phrase "Israeli aggression" sets your teeth on edge for the reason that you claim, then they ought to stay that way; I submit that having your teeth on edge is of less international importance than what might allegedly have given rise to it.

Every nation has a right to defend itself; Obama's observations was thus a mere statement of the b**d**g obvious. The Israelis have a nation state. The Palestinians do not. I do not condone aggression towards either from either or indeed from anywhere else. That said, Gaza is hardly what anyone is his/her right mind would call a level playing field (although it might well turn into a levelled one if aggression continues to escalate).

'Football' ... when it refers to a game played by thick-necked thugs clad in helmets and body armour in which the misshaped ball is hardly ever kicked and the game keeps stopping every few seconds to allow referees dressed as clowns to bawl loudly to players and spectators, apparently in an attempt to try and explain to everyone what the hell is going on ...

'No names, no packdrill.' Usually accompanied by that annoying whistle and used to hide behind an accusation of some kind.:

somebody on the BBC news sites keeps using the word about when approximately would be better [in my opinion]

But according to the NAO, between 2004 and 2011 about 2,300 avoidance schemes were disclosed to the tax authorities, with more than 100 new schemes emerging in each of the past four years.

Oh mercia, isn't that just normal usage? I really can't see anything exceptionable about that... "About" can be used like that, surely?
