As a small boy I came out with "adaption" and was immediately corrected by my father. I then went to the dictionary and, oh joy, adaption was a proper word!

(Perhaps the debut of this particular smart-ass???)
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

A beauty on Newsnight last night - Kirsty Wark was speaking to a Marie Harf at the US State Department who (referring to the Iraq situation) came out with "humanitarianly"

She described the apparente seizure of the Mosul Dam by Isis and the possible consquences as a "fluid situation" I hoped Kirsty would say "in more senses than one".

People starting a reply with the word "so" instead of "well" or "now". It seems to imply a continuation of something said earlier that has not,, in fact, been said. So this seems to have crept in recently, I think.

I hate the sort of time-wasting rhetorical repetition often used in speech making, but also sometimes on radio interviews - eg: "The Government carried out its mandate to do so-and-so; the Government reversed the damaging cuts introduced by the last government; (to confected rising howls from the opposition benches - that's another thing) the Government delivered on its promises in educational reform; the Government did pull out of Iraq;" etc etc. Baroness Warsi did it this morning on Today, imperiously talking over the head of her admittedly perpetually interrupting interviewer. And that too is a BIG irritation for more than just me, I'm sure.

          Don't get me started!

Secondly we know that Scotland is a wealthy nation with abundant natural resources. With independence we can turn that prosperous economy into a just society.

And finally no one will ever govern Scotland better than the people who live and work in Scotland - we'll always make the best decisions about Scotland's future.

Voting yes is a vote for ambition over fear. It tells the world that Scotland is an equal nation that carries itself with confidence and self-belief.

This is our moment - let's take it."

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Mind-boggling pomposity from Scotland's answer to Eric Pickles - between them there's a decent sized third person waiting to emerge, I reckon

not so much setting teeth on edge as just plain silly..

" Buy now, while stocks last".

(see "Talking about Music" for slightly extended rant.....)

Yes. Do you remember Alfred Brendel's last Prom, when he played an encore - not that great by his standards - followed by the usual gushing presenter.

Not quite words/phrases, but watching my first Prom last night, Heavens! where did this Pinky and Perky act come from? CCNN?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
