"Wake-up call" (possibly a good thing if it avoids "sleep-walking into" something nasty like a "ticking time-bomb")

Another contestant from weather forecasting: the chap on the wireless who keeps talking about "bits and pieces of rain"

Wanted to run those past you, so you can get a handle on where I'm coming from (acknowledgements to VodkaDilc #104)

And off-topic, congratulations to Amateur51 for exceeding 10,000 posts. Wow!

            Breathtaking
            Jaw-dropping
            and
            literally breathtaking
            and

People saying "on the weekend", instead of "at the weekend".

When you ask for an espresso in a coffee shop and the barista replies "An expresso".

            "Barista"

Shop assistants (including "baristas") who say something like "y'arigh?" (presumably = "are you alright?") when they mean "How can I help you?", or "What would you like?".

Ah, I can partly explain that!

Shop assistants are commonly instructed never to say to a prospective client 'how can I help you?' because management teaches that it 'invites a negative response'. Honestly!

They are instead advised to slyly sidle up to any innocent-looking and unsuspecting customer and say something like 'hello, have you seen this quite remarkable and inexpensive AAA battery recently imported from China?' Which, of course, invites even more of a negative response.

'Y'arigh?' is certainly a heck of a lot simpler!

                            "Grow the business"
"Step change" (I once corrected this to "steep change", which I thought made slightly more sense).

Doesn't exactly set my teeth on edge, but what does 'take a rain check' mean when you decline something? (actually, it does rather smtoe when it's used by people who don't know what it means, as I suspect most don't)
