Today we're opening "a new chapter in our national story".
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I had countless arguments with the marketing department at one of my places of employment when they used to come up with slogans using a comparative without giving the comparison in full.
We've all seen this type of thing:
Building a better future (or, even worse, Building better for the future).
        What?
Better than you used to do (probably not saying too much), or better than you think your competitors build (possibly too risky a claim!)?

I frequently discuss this issue with my car radio........it is indeed irritating.

Or the seemingly ubquitous, Build Back Better, used many times and I don't fully understand what it's supposed to mean.

( what an awful thought that is)

Just heard on the BBC News, "criterias".

                  It was a sports commentator.

Was it reported live from a stadia ?

                        Most amount.

And similar. Especially when spoken by media professionals.....

                          Authored - i.e. used as a verb.

I know what you mean: largest amount/quantity/number. Most amount would be OK in some contests: e.g.: "Many complain about left-wing bias at the BBC, but of such complaints, most amount to little of any substance".

Interesting that OED says the modern usage (=written, wrote) is rare before the 20th century. It's part of a group of words like curate v. (orig. US 1934) and animateur (1950) which for some reason always make me think: "Ha, liberal elite!".

But there's an earlier usage, 'To be the cause, source, or origin of; to instigate; to create': "The last foul thing Thou ever author'dst" (Chapman's Homer, 1598) which sounds all right. But "The Palestinian tragedy was authored here in the building in which I write (author?)" (G Galloway, Guardian, 2001) just sounds odd.

apparently WHSmith are "Applying the learnings " of previous lockdowns.

I suppose people have learning, but seeks clumsy to me though, at best.
