'Bail out', in the contemporary sense of a 'rescue package', because it's a cliche so far removed from its original sense as to be comic. To bail something out requires a bucket (baille). Young men bailing out of a burning plane creates a similar, figurative, image of decanting. But countries bailing out another's economy do so by pumping money in, not out.

"throwing the baby out with the bath water" - it beggars belief how many times I've heard that recently - in fact it's reached a crescendo - [I can't remember when it first kicked off] - obviously somebody (at the coal face) needs to get a grip, though I wouldn't want to point the finger because it's probably only the tip of the icebergLast edited by mercia; 11-11-12, 14:32.
