Yes, you can. I was referring to the academic etiquette. In Paisley's case, I believe he is an alumnus of the Bob Jones University in Carolina, USA .

No idea. Same place as anyone else, I suppose. You either have completed a doctorate (PhD, D.Phil, D Mus, MD &c at university - or a medical degree at a lower level - or you haven't). What it pleases you to call yourself is up to you, I imagine, unless you're trying to pass yourself off as being qualified in some profession when you aren't).

The big one's coming up - Arsenal v United at the Emirates. Both teams on form, Gooners with the home advantage, United riding high at the top of the league.

What you quote wasn't my view, though. I went on to say The usage is meant to illustrate what previous contributors to this thread have already decreed.

The practice of exemplifying just what a poster objects to about a phrase by using the phrase, on this thread, in a poster's preferred sense instead too often fails to register, which must be a source of great frustration to the poster.

To clarify: I was referring to Mr Tipps' post which had mentioned 'honorary degree' as a phrase that 'set his teeth on edge', Mr Hinton's modest comment that he did not feel his own comments merited the granting of an honorary degree, and followed by your comment (which I quoted) which I understood, possibly erroneously, to be about 'honorary degrees' in general.

'Leaving the present case aside' was an indication that I did not wish to comment on whether Mr Hinton, in this case, deserved an honorary degree or not.

The main point I was following up was your comment which I understood, possibly erroneously, to be about 'honorary degrees' in general, namely that they required 'no merit whatsoever'. I apologise if you were meaning that Mr Hinton's comments required no merit. Or something else. That was what the phrase which you have placed in bold was meant to refer to, possibly in error.

Possibly, but this is a comment which eludes my comprehension.

Padriag tried to do the self-referential thing as well, rather neatly I thought, but that too failed to register.

Mine too, I fear; not to worry, though!

I'd thought that it was a thread about phrases and words that set members' teeth on edge rather than one dedicated to the provision of posts that would elude the comprehension of some members, even including that of FF herself.

I don't imagine for a moment that any posters intended their posts to elude the comprehension of anyone - in fact I'd guess they were rather disappointed.

which I agree is pretty incomprehensible.

I didn't suggest such and accordingly did not use the word "intended"; my point was to draw attention to the thread topic rather than to compromises in comprehension, intended or otherwise -and what you meant by "that kind of thread" is something of which I remain less than certain...

Anyway, given the sheer number of posts in the thread to date, it would seem that there's ample work around for dentists...

                                Compo sight.

Though I guess that notwithstanding the new leadership, that particular pronunciation will stay, were I to re-join or not.
