I used to think it was quite a cool word, even before I knew what it meant (cf. 'words you love' thread)... but it seems to me it's become a lazy critic's word for any sort of imaginative creation that isn't 'happy'.

If I hear the phrase "dystopian vision" (often from one of those annoyingly earnest R3 evening critics like Philip Dodd ), I'm afraid I now just say 'oh please' and turn off (assuming no one else is listening of course - I'm not a total savage)

Ha ha Cals! I've just finished my dissertation on utopian and dystopian literature and I have to say I'm now totally sick of it too! Oddly, it's a term that's only come into use fairly recently (arch-'dystopians' Huxley and Orwell never used the term) and is now spread around all over the place .. like 'orwellian' or ballardian'!

Having almost completed the paper I shall now have to de-dystopianise!

"The ethnic cleansing of iconic populations is something that I think personally is completely unacceptable, I'm really passionate about that. "

Originally used, I understand, in the 19th century as a euphemism for those who have died, it's a dreadful label.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

One phrase that drives me up the wall (and I'm not reading nearly 1600 posts to see if anyone has got in before me) is 'social media'.

I have to restrain myself from hurling something heavy at the TV every time this one gets an airing.
