Considering government politicians (of whatever hue) may reasonably aspire to be re-elected what has made you arrive at such a shockingly alternative view of natural human ambition then, Floss ... ?
An unimpeachable source, so it must be true. However, RM appeared to lay the responsibility for such problems at the door of the government - which hasn't been rresponsible for maintaining track for about twenty years. The private sector organisation that was responsible cut staff, farmed out maintenance to companies that weren't very experienced, and was fined for not maintaining track after at least one major crash.
(incidentally, it would be interesting to know how many major incidents there were under BR's tenure, compared with the number since privatisation)
(Maybe slightly off topic but I don't think it merits a thread of it's own !)
The recent stuff in the media about the tax status of freelancers working for the BBC reinforces my suspicion that people don't understand at all the nature of freelance working at all . I heard Theresa May on R4 yesterday implying that because some people are freelance that they somehow are avoiding paying tax and NI , which seems a little odd to me as I seem to have been paying these for many years. Some people indeed do break the law but one would expect someone in government to be a little more informed ? (though give Gove's understanding of education I really do wonder what planet these people live on ?)

I didn't hear what she said; what was it? The prospect that someone in her position appears to be wholly lacking in the most basic understanding of what it means to be a self-employed sole trader is so absurd that I can only suggest that she get herself sacked and tries to start up her own small business in order that she might discover a few salient facts for herself at first hand.
HSBC bank says it is looking into allegations that criminals have used offshore accounts at its Jersey operation for money laundering. The bank issued a statement after the Daily Telegraph newspaper said it was at the centre of a major investigation by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
HSBC said it was investigating "an alleged loss of certain client data in Jersey as a matter of urgency".

It will of course be interesting to discover (if ever we really can) to what extent these allegations are true, who was and is guilty of exactly what (if at all) and how serious the consequences are for whom (if indeed any of them are so); in the meantime, I cannot help but think that, just as it used to be said (and no doubt still is) that the best source of advice on how to avoid and/or evade tax is a recently retired senior tax inspector with a pension larger than his/her conscience, the most adept kind of organisation to assist in the commission of money laundering is probably a bank...
