Agreed Alison - a bit special and as we had no rain yesterday the first of 40 days of sun ........

Nothing especially interesting on the forum today apart from Holst vocal music.

Perhaps it's time to switch on some Havergal Brian.

Ascension Day / Holy Thursday...and a public holiday in many European countries. Any suitable music?

Well, God is gone up in both English and Latin (Ascendit Deus) variants for starters!

JSB cantatas 37, 128, 43, and 11 are listed in the Harnoncourt/Leonhardt set I have as being Ascension Day cantatas.

Surely Holy Thursday is the Thursday in Holy Week, i.e., Maund(a)y Thursday?

Yes - BWV 11 is the "Ascension Oratorio"

Obviously a false Assumption up thread.

Just played Leonhardt in 128. The German "Himmelfahrt" (heaven journey) is nicely expressive. Am I misremembering or did we get a day off primary school in the 1950s in order to go to church (or not, in my case)?

                          A counsel of despair!

Two hippos in a pond. After a longish pause one says -"Do you know, I keep thinking it's Thursday."

Glad to be reminded of a Punch classic -

[ I had always remembered it as Thursday, but it seems to be Tuesday... ]

A favourite from my own choir days: God is Gone Up with a Merry Noise by William Croft.

I always used to associate Thursdays with rain. It just always seemed (seems?) to rain on Thursdays. Or at least be dull and cloudy.
