Always liked John Mortimer's witty one-liner about time and old age: 'It's like you're having breakfast every five minutes'.

A short working week this week after my trip down for the Haitink concert and only two days holiday left this year one of which is Christmas Eve.

yup, certainly a fine star to Thursday weatherwise down here.

Didn't realise the Mahler was on the radio. RFH Sold out.
What is it about Mahler that sells so many tickets compared even to other popular composers? Ought to read that book I suppose.

£5.99 on Kindle or as cheap as £7.30 for a used hardback. No excuse really.

And hopefully, from there, you won't go backwards to Brahms pc #1, Magnard et al

The father of 20th century music.

I guess part of the reason is that he's sufficiently tame, and for some, really only challenges technical composition values, rather than creates an alternative aesthetic, which would be uncomfortable.

People can listen to him and enjoy the tunes, melodies and selective harmonics, while simultaneously feeling that they are 'listening on the edge'. It's the best of all possible worlds.

This all occurs subconsciously, of course.

Listening to 'classical' or 'serious' music, even for the 'informed audience' is essentially a conservative behaviour.

You can't even give Schoenberg tickets away, never mind anything beyond.
